Waterfront in Broken Bow: what that actually gets you

Pine forest shoreline on Broken Bow Lake in southeastern Oklahoma on a clear autumn morning

If you want water outside the door rather than a lake somewhere over the ridge, Lost By The Pond Cabin is the one in our collection listed as waterfront. Two bedrooms, three beds, two baths, room for four, pets allowed, with a fishing pond at the bottom of the lawn and the outdoor furniture pointed at it. Guests have rated it a 9.5 across 64 reviews, which for a cabin this size usually means people got what they came for.

That's the honest shortlist for waterfront. One home, and a very specific kind of stay. Below, what it's actually like, and what to book instead if your group is bigger than four or you had the lake itself in mind.

The pond cabin, and who it suits

Fourteen hundred square feet, a fire pit and grill out by the water, a fireplace inside and a jacuzzi tub for after a cold morning on the bank. There's a hot tub too. Board games sit by the TV, which tells you what evenings here look like when the rain comes in off the Ouachitas and nobody feels like driving.

It sleeps four, so this is a couples' cabin, a small family's cabin, or a cabin for two people and a dog who would rather not be left at a kennel. It's near Hochatown and Broken Bow Lake, with Beavers Bend down the road for hiking and the boat ramps a short run north and west. The pond is yours; the lake is a drive. Be clear with yourself about which one you were picturing, because people sometimes book water and mean boats.

If you did mean boats: Firefly Ramp on Carson Creek is the quick one, roughly five minutes out of Hochatown, and the marina ramp inside the state park is the busiest on the lake. On a summer Saturday the marina line can run past half an hour while Firefly moves in ten or fifteen. Worth knowing before you hitch the trailer.

No waterfront big enough for your group? Here's the move

Nobody in a party of ten is fitting into a two-bedroom. The useful trade is this: sleep the whole crew in a larger cabin in the pines, and drive five to fifteen minutes to the water, which is what most people on this lake do anyway.

For the biggest groups, Bent Pine Lodge takes fourteen across four bedrooms, with two kings, two queens and two bunk beds, so the kids can be put somewhere and the adults can still have doors. The kitchen is set up to actually cook in: dishwasher, full oven and stove, a dining table big enough to sit everyone down at once. That matters more than it sounds when there are fourteen of you and the nearest restaurants are a drive up US-259.

For a group that wants more bathrooms than bedrooms arguments, Mystic River Retreat has five bedrooms and four baths for twelve, a hot tub, and a balcony that's genuinely the best room in the house first thing in the morning. It also has an EV charger, which still isn't a given this far into McCurtain County.

Bigger IS Better is another five-bedroom, four-bath cabin for twelve, and it's the one we point reunion and birthday-weekend groups toward: game room, fire pit, and enough separate living space that two families can share a house for four nights without filing for divorce.

Lake views without the shoreline

There's a middle option worth knowing about. EZ Ridge Retreat is pet-friendly, sleeps eleven across three bedrooms, and has lake views from the property. Hot tub, fire pit, a fireplace for the cold months. If your party is large and the water is mostly about what you look at with coffee in hand, this does more for you than a small waterfront cabin would.

Lost By The Pond also carries a lake view in its listing alongside the waterfront pond. Those are two different things, and both are real here.

Traveling with dogs

Pets are allowed at Lost By The Pond, which is the part that makes it work for a lot of people: you can fish off your own lawn, light the fire pit, and the dog stays on the property the whole time. Beyond that, several of our cabins take pets, and they span a useful range of sizes.

  • Whispering Trails Lodge sits back in the trees and sleeps nine, with a grill and a fire pit outside and forest trails close by.
  • Driftwood Cabin holds eight in two bedrooms plus a loft, with tall windows and a private hot tub.
  • Pino Vista Lodge has a zip line in the yard and a Tesla charger in the drive, which is an unusual pairing anywhere, let alone Hochatown.

Between The Pines, The Gallery, and the smaller end

Parties of six to eight have the deepest bench here, and the choice comes down to temperament. Between The Pines is three bedrooms for eight with two kings and two twins, a hot tub, an outdoor firepit and a balcony set for dinner outside. There are video games inside, which earns its keep on a wet afternoon.

The Gallery In The Pines goes the other direction: design-forward, two king bedrooms plus a queen sofa bed for six, tall windows and a fireplace. It's the cabin for a couples' weekend where nobody is bringing a cooler full of hot dogs.

Driftaway Lodge fits six and has a game room and hot tub. Worry Less, Cabin More sleeps six across two bedrooms with a hot tub, outdoor firepit and grill. And Whispering Wooded Loft squeezes ten into three bedrooms by putting built-in bunks in the loft, kings below, which is the right shape for two families or a group of friends who don't mind the arrangement.

What's worth checking before you book

Three things decide most Broken Bow trips, and bedroom count is only one of them.

  • Where you'll put the boat in. Firefly, Stevens Gap, Cedar Creek, Holly Creek, Carson Creek and the Beavers Bend Marina ramp all serve the lake. The marina ramp sits inside the state park and carries a day-use fee.
  • Whether you're cooking. Every cabin here has a full kitchen, but the ones that work for large groups are the ones with a table everyone fits around, which is why Bent Pine Lodge gets booked by the crowd that arrives with a brisket.
  • How far you want to drive for dinner. Hochatown's restaurants are clustered along US-259: Mountain Fork Brewery for wood-fired pizza and beer, Grateful Head Pizza Oven for a patio the kids can run around, Abendigo's Grill & Patio for a proper sit-down evening, Stevens Gap Restaurant for steaks, Rolling Fork Takery for coffee and a fast breakfast. Most are a few minutes from each other. From downtown Broken Bow you're adding fifteen to twenty minutes each way.

Getting here, and then booking

Most of our guests drive. It's a little over three hours from Dallas–Fort Worth, about three and a half from Oklahoma City, three from Little Rock, and the long haul from Houston runs closer to five and a half. If you're flying, Texarkana is the nearest commercial airport, about ninety minutes south. Hochatown is the strip of cabins and restaurants a few miles north of town along 259, right outside the park gate, and almost everything you'll want is a fifteen-minute drive or less from almost everything else.

We book direct, which keeps the platform fees off your total, and we answer the phone. Tell us the dates, how many of you there are, and whether the dog is coming, and we'll tell you which of these cabins is open and which one fits the trip you're describing. If waterfront is the whole point, say so early: there's one, and it goes fast in the fishing months.
