One-bedroom cabins for a Hochatown family trip

If your plan is a few days of Hochatown's go-karts, mini golf and petting-zoo goats, and you want to sleep four people in a one-bedroom cabin, three of ours do that: Lost In The Past Cabin, Lost On The River Cabin and Free My Soul. A fourth, Chapparal Lodge, is also a one-bedroom and sleeps six, which surprises people until they see it. Read on for which suits which family.
One bedroom here doesn't mean two people
The thing worth knowing before you filter anything is that a one-bedroom cabin in this part of McCurtain County is usually a small lodge with a loft, a sleeper, or both, and the bedroom count undersells it badly. Chapparal Lodge runs to 1,600 square feet with one bedroom and two bathrooms, and sleeps six. That is a bigger footprint than plenty of two-bedroom cabins, and the second bathroom is what makes it work on a morning when everyone wants to be at the Maze by opening.
So treat "1 bedroom" as a price and layout signal rather than a capacity one, and read the sleeps number instead. Three of our one-bedrooms sleep four. One sleeps six. One, Sweet Thang, sleeps two and is built for couples, so if you're travelling with kids it isn't your cabin, however much the farmhouse kitchen appeals.
The three that sleep four
Lost In The Past Cabin is the one I'd steer a family of four toward if the weather looks uncertain. The hot tub is indoors, which changes the arithmetic of a rainy March afternoon in a way nothing else does: the kids get the thing they were promised, and nobody is standing on a wet deck negotiating about it. There's a fireplace, a balcony, board games for the evening, and bicycles. It's a Hochatown-area cabin close to Broken Bow Lake and Beavers Bend, so the drive to the strip of attractions along Highway 259 is short.
Lost On The River Cabin is the same rustic-luxury idea with a hot tub and fireplace, pet-friendly, sleeping four. Free My Soul is the plainer, cosier version of the format: one bedroom, one bathroom, four guests, hot tub, TV for the evening when the kids have run out of daylight. All three take dogs, which matters more here than in most places, because a lot of families drive in from Dallas and Oklahoma City with the dog in the back rather than board it for four days.
Chapparal Lodge, if you're six
Five miles south of Hochatown, Chapparal Lodge is secluded, rustic, and the only one-bedroom on this page that sleeps six with two bathrooms. The trade is real: you're a little further from the Highway 259 corridor where the petting zoo, Bigfoot Speedway and Gutter Chaos sit, so you'll be driving in and out rather than nipping back for a nap. Families who want the cabin to feel like the point of the trip, rather than a base camp, tend to like that. Families with a toddler who naps at one o'clock usually don't.
It has a hot tub and a fireplace, and at 1,600 square feet there's room for six people to be in different rooms at once, which after a day at the Safari Park is the amenity that actually earns its keep.
How the geography shapes the week
Beavers Bend State Park sits roughly seven to nine miles north of Broken Bow town, just outside Hochatown, and you're there in well under fifteen minutes from most cabins in this area. The practical effect is that you don't have to choose between the park and the town attractions. You can do the Nature Center near Buckeye Campground in the morning, be back for lunch, and still make a mid-afternoon run at Beaver's Bend Mining Company for gemstone panning and the dinosaur mini golf.
A few things worth knowing when you build the days:
- Hochatown Petting Zoo runs ten in the morning until seven in the evening, so it absorbs a late afternoon when a hike has gone sideways. The animals are mostly rescues and kids can feed the goats and ducks.
- Beavers Bend Safari Park is a drive-through wildlife park with a walkabout section, which means it works in weather that kills every outdoor plan you had.
- The Maze of Hochatown, a wooden maze with checkpoints, puzzles and a viewing tower, suits tweens and teens who want to race each other rather than be shown things.
- Hochatown Escape Games has seven themed rooms including a bomb-defusal room only about one team in five beats, which is either the best or the worst news for competitive families.
- Rugaru Adventures runs ziplines over the Broken Bow Lake scenery and SWINCAR off-road tours through the forest.
- Beavers Bend Depot train rides and the petting zoo both suit the toddler-to-elementary end of the family.
There are more than sixteen miles of hiking trails in the state park, and the free ones, Friends, Cedar Bluff, Beaver Lodge and the David Boren trail, are the ones to point a family at. For food, Grateful Head Pizza and Mountain Fork Brewery both do pizza you can eat on a patio with children present, and Okie Girls Coffee handles ice cream duty.
What to settle before you book
Three questions decide this for most families, and none of them is about the hot tub.
Where is the fourth person sleeping? A cabin that sleeps four with one bedroom is doing it with a loft or a sleeper, and that's a different proposition for two teenagers than for a six-year-old. Ask us about the specific layout before you commit rather than after.
One bathroom or two? With four people and a schedule built around opening times, one bathroom is fine. With six, Chapparal Lodge's second bathroom is the difference between leaving at nine and leaving at ten.
Is the hot tub indoors or out? Lost In The Past Cabin's indoor tub is a genuinely different product from a deck tub in January. Our cabins carry hot tubs, fire pits, grills, heating and air conditioning as a matter of course, so the question isn't whether there's a tub, it's where it is.
Booking, and the part where we're useful
We run nineteen homes in and around Broken Bow and Hochatown, and the one-bedrooms are the ones guests ask the most questions about, because the listing never tells you enough. Booking direct with us costs less than going through a platform, since there are no platform fees stacked on top, and it puts you in contact with the people who actually look after the cabin rather than a support queue.
That matters more on a family trip than a couples' weekend. If you want to know whether the loft stairs are steep, whether the drive in is gravel, or which cabin puts you closest to the attractions you've already bought tickets for, text us. We'll tell you, and if the answer is that a different cabin suits you better, we'll say that too.
